The Internet of Things for Clinical Supplies

Session Abstract:

In 2017 the FDA approved 46 new medicines and over half require temperature monitoring and control. Many of the new drugs are for cellular and genetic therapies that are tied to patients own cells. This makes clinical trials logistics so important because the right cells needs to be shipped in a very small timespan and at the right temperature. We will show how using the Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be use in clinical supplies. Using actual results from a recent proof-of-concept (POC) for a Biotech company, that ships small quantities of medicines from a dispenser directly to a patient in a hospital.

Target audience: Intermediate level – practitioners that have some knowledge of IoT and interested in learning how to apply this technology. This would also be appropriate for clinicians, logistics, and supply chain folks, and data scientists to see how best to apply this technology under these circumstances along with C-Level executives who want to decide if this technology could reduce risk and save money.

The audience will take away three key items:

  • The business background of Pharmaceutical clinical trials: market size opportunity and challenges
  • Real examples of IoT devices providing ‘real-time’ visibility to a typical clinical supply scenario. What this means for improving your business.
  • Once you establish the use of IoT what are the next steps in leveraging this data? How does machine learning and Blockchain fit in with the industry and the current Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) of 2013?
