Leveraging Geolocation to Unlock IoT Value

Session Abstract:

Because many IoT use-cases involve movable “things”, physical location is a key element in a comprehensive IoT solution. The ability to track or monitor location can help unlock additional value. But locating IoT devices presents unique challenges due to their intrinsic power, storage capacity, battery life and processing limitations.

Skyhook, pioneers and 20 year veterans of mobile location methods, will present an overview of the IoT-related strengths, drawbacks, and lessons learned for the various location methods on the market today including:

  • A-GNSS
  • Wi-Fi
  • Cell ID
  • O-TDOA
  • U-TDOA
  • Beacons (e.g. BLE)
  • Hybrid combinations of the above

Skyhook’s presentation will cover various use-cases including:

  • Asset tracking/monitoring
  • Emergency location

  • People tracking (e.g., field workers, opted-in customers)
  • Wearables
  • Smart Energy
  • Others

Chief Technology Officer at Skyhook
As CTO, Rob leads the team charged with developing Skyhook’s technology working with our partners and customers to develop new wireless location solutions. Rob Anderson is one of the leading global experts in wireless location technology with over 20 years of experience in telecommunications. His proven experience in the field, exemplified by his 64 U.S. patents, helps to expand the company’s portfolio of products and services and further establish Skyhook as a leader in location technology. Prior to joining Skyhook, Rob held systems engineering positions at Lockheed Martin and TRW (now Northrop Grumman), focusing on satellite cellular systems. Rob Anderson holds both Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.
