Data Intelligence in the Built Environment: Adopting a Systems Thinking Approach
The availability of data and understanding of what data can be collected, analyzed, and used to communicate with stakeholders and make data-driven decisions is the most significant benefit of a smart building populated with IoT solutions. Data provides quantifiable, actionable insight to solve problems, realize opportunities, and continuously improve. However, one of the biggest challenges the IoT industry faces is unwinding the current practice of implementing one solution at a time without stepping back and stepping up to change the way we design and plan. For data intelligence to work effectively and impact an organization, leaders need to move from linear thinking or the concept of step-by-step progression to systems thinking approaching IoT as the “Connectedness of Things.”
This session will share the concepts of systems thinking for IoT implementations and how proper planning and design will lead to data intelligence success.

Bill Moten is a respected authority on Smart Buildings, Internet of Things (IoT), and Wireless Solutions. Bill holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Dallas. A veteran of the Communications Technology industry, Bill has been developing emerging technology and analytics solutions for over 25 years utilizing wireless, wired, and optical networks including IoT, Property Tech, digital assistants, Cellular, Broadband, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), WiFi, Bluetooth, LoRa, ZigBee, Z-Wave, and Public Safety. Bill’s IoT project experience includes smart agriculture, track & trace, smart buildings, and more. He is a frequent presenter at national industry conferences, published in international industry magazines, and author of smart buildings and technology industry blogs. Bill also serves on the Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) & Telecommunications Industry Association’s (TIA) SPIRE smart building assessment and rating program.
