WAVELENGTH NETWORKING SOLUTIONS TO FUEL THE IOT WAVE
Session Abstract:
With IoT marking its presence in almost all fields, what can be the potential risk to its proliferation and functioning? What if the “internet” of things, the mission-critical IoT applications, somehow goes out of connection for a second? Such a scenario or an outage can mark questions on the very existence of the use cases delivered by IoT.
So, where lies the solution?
It’s the heart of IoT, powered by connectivity that makes all the difference, and the right networks are the fuel that powers the IoT Wave.
The evolution of the silicon technology used to build ASICs that provide digital signal processing (DSP) enabled the development of high-speed coherent optical engines. But, as coherent technology drove spectral efficiency closer to Shannon Capacity limits, C-Band Spectrum was no longer enough. So, this started a move towards L-Band spectrum usage, which became a key to improving fiber capacity.
Future optical networks need to support digital coherent optics and high-performance transponders. C-band Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) transmission maximizes capacity and should get deployed with the support of the C+L combined band. C+L band designs double the fiber capacity and help to meet the exponential bandwidth demands of the digital world. Hitless migration from C-Band only to C+L-Band designs is necessary to avoid any service impact. Advanced Reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) solutions based on colorless technologies optimize scale and agility, and the DSP solutions optimize wavelength performance.
Disaggregation is now happening, which brings another move in the industry toward adopting Open Optical Line Systems (OLS). Open line systems allow the operators to choose the best-in-class components for their network infrastructure. OLS removes vendor lock-ins and gives the operator the leverage to choose the solution and drive down costs. Join this session in IoT Gram Slam 2022 to ride on the informative wave of wavelengths in the optical spectrum that make future connectivity possible and power the next wave of IoT.
