Vertical industry alignment (Healthcare, Retail, Automotive)

As the growth in data acquisition across many facets of everyday life grows new opportunities emerge to create new services, or better serve existing customers. As the collection of data reaches further in to our everyday lives industry sectors need to be open to the opportunities that this new knowledge offers, from simply being more efficient to see completely new business opportunities and develop and implement aligned offerings that can demonstrate value and ROI.

Healthcare IoT:

The rapid growth of personal fitness devices is generating a huge amount of big data that is helping to drive future healthcare planning regionally, nationally and internationally. For an individual the change in a woman’s resting heart rate can provide the first clue of pregnancy, whilst big data can highlight the average levels of activity of a generation, enabling more informed future healthcare planning.

We will explore:

  • How can IoT be used to find cures for diseases
  • Opportunities and Challenges of Connected People, Environments and Machines
  • What steps are needed to promote a more patient centered healthcare delivery

Retail IoT:

Real time data on retail sales can highlight clusters of online sales by location informing decisions on new store opening, or conversely store closures. Seasonal demand for clothing and sportswear can be reacted to more promptly with real time stock levels across retail chains leading to prompt reordering of successful lines and relocation of stock to demand hotspots. Car manufacturers have been able to integrate data from showroom orders into their production lines so that they can offer more bespoke finishing of cars leading to higher margins and customers receiving a more tailor made end product. This also leads to the automated trend spotting allowing a manufacturer the opportunity to highlight features that in turn generate increased sales.

We will explore:

  • How to embrace the Retail Omni-channel
  • Where IoT Improves Operations and Customer Experience
  • Next generation Supply and demand chain strategies

IoT in Automotive:

Recording data on the real time performance of cars can lead to improvements to fuel efficiency in the next generation of engines, or help car insurers identify which demographic, or geographic segments represent higher, or lower risks making future premium planning better informed.

We will explore:

  • What value can IoT bring to the Automotive industry
  • When and what needs to happen to enable driverless cars to become a reality?
  • How can IoT accelerate monetization opportunities for connected vehicle and mobility services

Security, privacy & trust

Topping the list of enterprise, governments and society concerns about an ever more connected world is the issue of keeping data secure. With the arrival in the home of smart devices that listen for and react to user commands, privacy and trust are taken to a new level too. As the consumerized world enters the business premise, this poses further risks and challenges to overcome for enterprises. Developers, Makers, and the companies that market IoT devices have moral and legal responsibilities to ensure they stand up to rigorous scrutiny in how they handle this responsibility.

We will explore:

  • How has IoT altered the security equation and can present techniques and technologies cope with the threat?
  • What role can governments and lawmakers play in setting the rules of engagement
  • Should there be penalties imposed where breaches occur because of IoT device (where is the liability)
  • What are fundamental security practices enterprises should employ when deploying an IoT strategy?

Analytics and big data

The promise of increasing volumes of more timely data (in theory) should lead to better informed business decision making. Ultimately businesses, whatever their size, need useful / relevant data to enable them to spot new market opportunities; expose inefficiencies within their organization and allow their businesses to quickly adapt to better meet the needs of their customers. As the world becomes ever more connected how do we a harness the data we are generating in a meaningful way that can deliver real benefits to businesses and their consumers?

We will explore:

  • Strategies to extract real time value from data
  • What foundations need to be in place to enable data transformation
  • Where does Edge Computing fit in?

Connectivity and infrastructure

With increased cross border trade stimulated by real time connectivity, the importance of both robust infrastructure and the harmonisation of regulations are becoming ever more important. In many instances the laws of countries are struggling to adapt and keep up with the pace of technology. This coupled with the investment in the necessary infrastructures is presenting nations with challenges they couldn’t have predicted even 10 years ago. Major investment decisions by businesses are being impacted not just by physical location, but the ability of the host country to provide the necessary infrastructure and skill sets now and in to the future.

We will explore:

  • The role of 5G in IoT
  • How to create a bottleneck-less world
  • What and where do further investments in infrastructure look like

IoT architectures

The growth of interest among consumers in technologies that are seen to offer lifestyle enhancements is both stimulating investment at corporate level and leading to the expansion of ideas that be tailored to offer practical benefits. With wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth already established in the domestic environment there are established technologies that communication can be built around. Devices and services that harness existing wireless technology in the home are likely to achieve greater penetration and acceptance. Building the links seamlessly between the end user and the host are critical to widespread adoption.

We will explore:

  • The critical role of open and Interoperable architecture
  • Establishing a framework and protocol for end-to-end connectivity (LPWAN, LORA etc)

Application of machine learning and AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Real time data and the ability of software that learns from continuous data streams creates exciting opportunities from automated stock reordering, to making and even replacing complex manual manpower processes.  Anticipating customer demand and spotting where the real sales opportunities are would historically have required human interaction to analyze the data.  24/7 data streams can be analysed automatically and at a very practical scale continuous weather data can automatically trigger alerts to send fleets of road gritters out at night to ensure the roads are safe for use the following morning. Automated vehicles continually feeding back data have the capability to activate the replanning of routes to keep traffic flowing efficiently at peak times.

We will explore:

  • How and where AI can be applied to enterprise
  • What are the challenges associated with widespread AI
  • Do we need to set a common framework for the advancement of AI in society

User applications & business use-cases for IoT

IoT offers is the ability for the world to become more energy smart leading to much more effective use of resources. As more of our daily tasks are continuously monitored a better understanding of peak energy consumption and the ability to match power generation to real time demand, rather than just through historical planning will lead to a significant reduction in wasted energy. For businesses applications that lead to greater operating efficiencies and for individuals monitoring that leads to better energy management and leads to lower utility bills are already being adopted. The ever increasing pressures on global resources will only accelerate demand for practical applications that deliver tangible benefits.

We will explore:

  • How IoT is being used by businesses and enterprises to automate processes
  • What value are enterprises realizing by deploying IoT
  • What lessons have been learned from customer experiences
