Evolving Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs)

Slide Deck

Session Abstract

Many analysts are predicting that the Internet of Things (IoT) will soon explode and require the monitoring and control of 50 billion devices.  Connecting all these new remote objects so they can be effectively tracked and/or managed will soon overwhelm our existing wireless networks.

This presentation is aimed at the solution developers, engineers, integrators and system designers that are charged with finding ways to effectively and efficiently communicate with this huge number of remote devices.

There are several new and innovative approaches coming to market that will shortly provide viable alternatives to the traditional cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, private-radio and satellite networks that Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and IoT have relied on in the past.  The new networks are called Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) and come in many flavors.  Some are being implemented now while others are working their way through standards committees and will soon be available for implementation.

This presentation will give a brief history of M2M and IoT and break down IoT into three high-level components:  devices; connectivity/wireless networks; and backend systems.  The emphasis will be on the emerging technologies and protocols that will enable LPWANs.

There are several LPWAN implementations being installed now and several protocol standards going through the process of development and ratification.  The presentation will go into more detail about each of these and point out their status as well as the pros and cons of each approach.  A brief comparison will be made between these solutions and the technologies that underpin them.

LPWANs will require either unlicensed frequencies, or dedicated cellular or private -radio spectrum to operate.  The status of TV White Space, the ISM bands, as well as other existing and potential new unlicensed spectrum will be explored.  Recent cellular-industry efforts to create and adopt a competing low-overhead/low-power/low-cost protocol will also be reviewed.
